Style and Spoons

Being stylish and chronically ill can be pretty hard. I’m guilty of falling back on sweatpants and a tee shirt so much that if I were a cartoon character, that’s what I would be drawn wearing. Now I know I’ve talked a lot about Joggers in the past, but I never talked about how to style them. So let’s look at how I’m wearing them!

IMG_0545.JPG

Joggers are an exercise pant in theory, so there’s nothing better than the combo of a loose tank, tight Joggers, and some cute tennis shoes. Whether you’re running errands or running a mile, this look will get you around town with no problem.

IMG_0816.JPG

However, if you’re feeling a little more boho, try styling joggers the same way you would normally wear palazzo pants. I like to add a bright top to a pair of loose joggers for a great look- bright printed Joggers get compliments everywhere I go, making this perfect for a Sunday at the farmer’s market or a local cafe. You could also add a tight tank and a loose kimono or cardigan.

Shoes are make it or break it with Joggers. I like my Tevas with the boho look. However, if I’m styling it up with a cute top, especially a peplum (a bright pink one from Rue 21 is currently my favorite to pair with some slim-fit grey joggers) a pair of cute flats is a must. Pairing casual Joggers with a dressy top is a bold move, but if you do it right, it’s a great one! (Plus peplum hides bloating, perfect for those prednisone months or any time you’re having stomach symptoms.)

Clothes that are cute and comfy are a necessity in anyone’s wardrobe, but especially the chronically ill. I feel a lot better when I look cute!

Style Sunday

When my best friend, Taylor, asked me to take a professional photo for her LinkedIn account, I sprung at the chance for a photoshoot. We used to take photos of each other all the time in high school, but after we moved apart we had a lot less time for goofy shenanigans. Yesterday was the perfect time to reconnect and have some photo fun- especially since we got to use my mom’s Canon Rebel.

IMG_0992.JPG

Taylor has always had a really cool sense of style. For our photoshoot, she brought a maxi-dress that she said was “her favorite” for her trip to Mexico, because she could “dress it up or down with different shoes and accessories.” The dress totally exemplifies what I’ve always liked about her style- it’s cool, it’s casual, and it’s totally her.

IMG_0963.JPG

Even though it was stormy and humid, we got some really great shots.

IMG_0987.JPG

It was great to goof around in front of a camera again! Taylor and I learned photography together, using her old point-and-shoot.

IMG_0989.JPG

Of course, we had to make time for an outfit change!

IMG_0988.JPG

Since it had been a while since Taylor was behind a real camera, she got some shots of me as well.

IMG_0990.JPG

The rain eliminated a lot of props we wanted to use, but we did find a step ladder!

IMG_0991.JPG

We had so much fun showing off our style that we’ve decided to do it again soon. After all, it’s her senior year of college, so she’s due for some super cute senior pictures, right?

It was great to do this stylish shoot with Taylor, and it was cool how willing she was to be on the blog. I guess some people are just made for fame! 😉

Style Sunday

Today we’re featuring a very special guest on the blog: my husband. Recently, he lost some weight and none of his jeans seemed to fit right anymore. Yeah, he only went from a 32″ waist to a 30″ waist, but that meant suddenly we had to order all his clothes online. It’s pretty hard to find pants measuring 30″x34″! J is also starting his professional career, so it was time for him to move on in his style choices anyway. I let him loose on a few of my favorite clothing sites, and here’s what he came up with:

IMG_0540.JPG

IMG_0537.JPG

Shirt: XS, asos (thrifted)
Pants: 30″ waist, Forever 21
Shoes: 11, Rue 21

Altogether, this look cost around $30. The pants seem to be high quality (better quality than most of the jeans I’ve bought from F21, what gives?) and they fit perfectly, even though he was too tall to fit the whole look into a photo.

J has been wearing this outfit to a lot of events at the school he works for, and I have to say I think he looks pretty suave! I might start letting him shop for himself soon.

Friday Five!

Is it that time of the week again? The end of the week, and the end of August- time seems to be flying this year!

As with every Friday, it’s time to share the things I loved this week. So here’s the best of the best of the week!

1. My Keurig Mini

I was impressed with my Keurig. I wrote about it before. But then I ordered a variety pack of tea, cider, and other speciality drinks for it. Now? This is the best invention ever!

IMG_0550.JPG

I’m really digging herbal teas, as too much caffeine seems to be irritating a bunch of symptoms that aren’t really blog appropriate. However, these hot cocoas and the cappuccino flavors rock!

2. Aviary Photo-editing App

This free app offers in-app purchases to beef up the already impressive editing capabilities. I’ve purchased a few extra sticker packs and borders to play with, just for fun, but even without them, this is the editing app I keep returning to. It’s easy to use and has some cool effects.

IMG_0553.JPG

Be careful though, it’s easy to get caught up in what you can do and over edit your photos.

3. Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks

I found one of these in my makeup drawer, completely unused. It was in a pretty coral color that matched what I was wearing, so I figured I would give it a try. The result? Loving it! A touch of color and completely non-drying. Perfect for my summer sunburnt lips!

4. The Sporty Look

So, I finally figured out how to style my Joggers. For a summer-to-fall transition look, I’m loving joggers with fun sneakers and a classic tee. For errands or just to look a little more fancy, I’m pairing peplum with my Joggers for a really neat look. But as much as I love the peplum+joggers? I just keep coming back to the sporty look.

5. Beets

I thought I hated beets, I really did. But after trying a local best salad from Grocery Bar, I’m a convert. They’re earthy, they’re pretty, and they’re perfect with goat cheese. Plus they’re inexpensive and readily available. Really, what more can you ask for in a root vegetable?

So what are you loving this week?

Rue 21 Mini Haul

I had some rueBucks this past week that needed to be spent. I’ve already talked about how much I love Joggers, so is it any wonder that I took the opportunity to get $20 off $40 and buy some cute ones? Here’s what I got.

IMG_0464.JPG

These are the orange tribal chevron Joggers and the black and grey chevron Joggers. They’re both made of a thin terrycloth material, much like a beach cover up. When I tried them on, they were both comfy, and not too warm. They’ll be perfect for fall!

I’m still trying to figure out exactly how to style these, so I should probably stop buying Joggers until I figure out how I’m going to wear them. Other than that dilemma, the only thing I don’t like is that I’m currently I between sizes at Rue21. I ordered an XL but probably could have gone with a L instead. It seems like at Rue 21 and Forever 21, every single pair of pants fits differently. If I weren’t so into online shopping, I would try on every single thing I bought from Rue.

IMG_0468.JPG

Joggers are starting at $16.99 for both girls and guys right now, so they’re a great price compared to other places with similar items. Forever 21 has a few pairs starting at $13, but they’re thinner than the ones I got from Rue and show some serious panty lines!

IMG_0467.JPG

Are you loving or hating the jogger trend this year? How are you styling your Joggers?

Friday Five

Okay, so I’ve decided to make this a regular thing. Friday is officially the time for me to make a list of the top five things I’m loving this week. Not only does this hopefully help you discover new things to try and love, it provides me with a reference when I’m looking back and thinking “so what WAS that mascara that I used to buy?” Yeah, it’s perfect, especially for Friday, which is a day for me to be lazy with blogging and spend time with friends anyway. So without further ado, let’s check out this week’s five!

1. Blueprint Juice.

IMG_0337.JPG

I’m nowhere near ready for one of the cleanses they offer, but if I missed a meal in a pinch or my digestion is feeling a little off, these juices are my go-to. Although I one day want to own my own juicer, these juices saved the day when I got glutened in St. Louis by someone not washing their hands after touching bread!

They’re also perfect for adding more fruit into my diet, because I hate the texture of fruit but usually love the taste. So, juices all day everyday!

2. Back to School Sales.

I’ve snagged so many great things at back to school sales the past month. Two pair of cropped pants on clearance because the weather was getting cold in St. Louis, three pairs of Joggers, a black dress, some grey flats, and a cute tank top. Not only can they be used next year, but warm socks and tall boots help the cropped pants make the transition from summer to fall!

IMG_0347.JPG

Yes, that picture of me with a dog is the best way to show off the cropped pants and flats. Don’t question it.

3. Gold eyeliner.

Seriously, lined lids are so in this season. I’m loving gold and other metallics for this look. NYC and Urban Decay both sell some pretty gold liners, so check them out if that sounds like something you’re into! Lined lids are an easy way to change up your look and can be classy or casual so it’s definitely worth a try this season.

4. Short hair.

I’ve been loving this for a long time, but after YouTube and Pinterest showed me some new ways to style my hair, I fell in love with it all over again. Yeah, I’m still waiting for it to grow out, but at least now I’m having fun doing it. Seriously, straight, curly, wavy, I feel like my hair can do no wrong! Especially now that I’ve splurged for a daily clarifying shampoo and some It’s A 10 styling products!

IMG_0411.JPG

5. Casual Walks.

I was really into hiking this summer, but it does NOT agree with my chronic illnesses. Instead, I’ve found that taking casual low key walks is a great way to de-stress while also exploring your area! Sticking to walking trails can make it easier on you, since there’s no steep uphills or weird terrain. I like walking with friends because it’s a great way to catch up while enjoying the beautiful weather, without the pressure of some other outdoor activities!

IMG_0323.JPG

So what are you loving this week?

Trend I’m Loving: Joggers

Okay, I’m a sucker for trends. Florals, orange lips, mint and coral, I’ve fallen for them all. Some of them have been less regrettable than others- I’m actually a fan of peplum now- but if it’s hit shelves since my junior year of high school, I’ve probably tried it.

This year, I’ve already found a fall trend I’m head over heels for. Joggers! Remember when yoga pants were in style? Like not just for errands and the gym, but yoga pants everywhere. At the mall, at the gym, at college campuses, at restaurants and banks across the country. I was a fan of the trend. They’re comfy, they’re flattering, and they can go from lounge wear to day wear with just a few changes.

Joggers are the new yoga pants. A bit more versatile than yoga pants, these skinny sweats come in every fabric, pattern, and color imaginable. They’re almost a modern take on the tragic harem pant trend of a few years past. (Tragic for me anyway. I do not look good in harem pants.)

IMG_0363.JPG

Anyway: I ordered a pair of Joggers as a treat for myself after a stressful week a bit ago. They finally arrived and I really don’t want to take them off. Mine were $13 from Forever 21, but you can find them almost everywhere right now!

So far I’ve tried them with a nice tank top and with a flowy blouse. I would definitely wear them out like that on a casual girl’s day, or during errands. I’m thinking during the winter I’ll be lounging in them with a loose sweatshirt, or wearing them out to the park with a cute sweater!

I’m thinking about ordering a pair in a less traditional sweatpants material, but we’ll see…
