Style and Spoons

Being stylish and chronically ill can be pretty hard. I’m guilty of falling back on sweatpants and a tee shirt so much that if I were a cartoon character, that’s what I would be drawn wearing. Now I know I’ve talked a lot about Joggers in the past, but I never talked about how to style them. So let’s look at how I’m wearing them!

IMG_0545.JPG

Joggers are an exercise pant in theory, so there’s nothing better than the combo of a loose tank, tight Joggers, and some cute tennis shoes. Whether you’re running errands or running a mile, this look will get you around town with no problem.

However, if you’re feeling a little more boho, try styling joggers the same way you would normally wear palazzo pants. I like to add a bright top to a pair of loose joggers for a great look- bright printed Joggers get compliments everywhere I go, making this perfect for a Sunday at the farmer’s market or a local cafe. You could also add a tight tank and a loose kimono or cardigan.

Shoes are make it or break it with Joggers. I like my Tevas with the boho look. However, if I’m styling it up with a cute top, especially a peplum (a bright pink one from Rue 21 is currently my favorite to pair with some slim-fit grey joggers) a pair of cute flats is a must. Pairing casual Joggers with a dressy top is a bold move, but if you do it right, it’s a great one! (Plus peplum hides bloating, perfect for those prednisone months or any time you’re having stomach symptoms.)

Clothes that are cute and comfy are a necessity in anyone’s wardrobe, but especially the chronically ill. I feel a lot better when I look cute!

Style Sunday

When my best friend, Taylor, asked me to take a professional photo for her LinkedIn account, I sprung at the chance for a photoshoot. We used to take photos of each other all the time in high school, but after we moved apart we had a lot less time for goofy shenanigans. Yesterday was the perfect time to reconnect and have some photo fun- especially since we got to use my mom’s Canon Rebel.

Taylor has always had a really cool sense of style. For our photoshoot, she brought a maxi-dress that she said was “her favorite” for her trip to Mexico, because she could “dress it up or down with different shoes and accessories.” The dress totally exemplifies what I’ve always liked about her style- it’s cool, it’s casual, and it’s totally her.

Even though it was stormy and humid, we got some really great shots.

It was great to goof around in front of a camera again! Taylor and I learned photography together, using her old point-and-shoot.

IMG_0989.JPG

Of course, we had to make time for an outfit change!

IMG_0988.JPG

Since it had been a while since Taylor was behind a real camera, she got some shots of me as well.

The rain eliminated a lot of props we wanted to use, but we did find a step ladder!

IMG_0991.JPG

We had so much fun showing off our style that we’ve decided to do it again soon. After all, it’s her senior year of college, so she’s due for some super cute senior pictures, right?

It was great to do this stylish shoot with Taylor, and it was cool how willing she was to be on the blog. I guess some people are just made for fame! 😉

Style Sunday

Today we’re featuring a very special guest on the blog: my husband. Recently, he lost some weight and none of his jeans seemed to fit right anymore. Yeah, he only went from a 32″ waist to a 30″ waist, but that meant suddenly we had to order all his clothes online. It’s pretty hard to find pants measuring 30″x34″! J is also starting his professional career, so it was time for him to move on in his style choices anyway. I let him loose on a few of my favorite clothing sites, and here’s what he came up with:

Shirt: XS, asos (thrifted)
Pants: 30″ waist, Forever 21
Shoes: 11, Rue 21

Altogether, this look cost around $30. The pants seem to be high quality (better quality than most of the jeans I’ve bought from F21, what gives?) and they fit perfectly, even though he was too tall to fit the whole look into a photo.

J has been wearing this outfit to a lot of events at the school he works for, and I have to say I think he looks pretty suave! I might start letting him shop for himself soon.

Simple Make-up Look

I don’t do make-up every day, partly because I work from home and seriously, my dog is not impressed with a full face of makeup and some beautifully curled hair. But recently, I went to a dinner celebrating my best friend returning home from a college trip to Mexico, and I wanted to look a little special.

Here I am pre-makeup!

IMG_0311.JPG

Not too bad, not too bad, but nothing special. So let’s see after.

IMG_0312.JPG

Much more appropriate for the occasion! For this simple look, I used a beauty blender to apply elf mineral primer, then elf BB cream. Then I tightlined half of my upper lids with NYX very black eyeliner pencil. I used Billion Dollar Brows brow pencil in brown and clear brow gel on my brows. Then, I swept elf baked highlighter in blush gems in a figure 8 motion around my eyes.

After that, all I did was apply some elf baked blush in peachy cheeky to the apples of my cheeks and top the look off with Covergirl Bombshell Curvaceous Mascara in Very Black. I’m in love with this mascara, guys. It has mixed reviews but personally I use it almost daily!

So that’s all for my simple, casual makeup look. What do you use for a casual dinner out?

Rue 21 Mini Haul

I had some rueBucks this past week that needed to be spent. I’ve already talked about how much I love Joggers, so is it any wonder that I took the opportunity to get $20 off $40 and buy some cute ones? Here’s what I got.

IMG_0464.JPG

These are the orange tribal chevron Joggers and the black and grey chevron Joggers. They’re both made of a thin terrycloth material, much like a beach cover up. When I tried them on, they were both comfy, and not too warm. They’ll be perfect for fall!

I’m still trying to figure out exactly how to style these, so I should probably stop buying Joggers until I figure out how I’m going to wear them. Other than that dilemma, the only thing I don’t like is that I’m currently I between sizes at Rue21. I ordered an XL but probably could have gone with a L instead. It seems like at Rue 21 and Forever 21, every single pair of pants fits differently. If I weren’t so into online shopping, I would try on every single thing I bought from Rue.

IMG_0468.JPG

Joggers are starting at $16.99 for both girls and guys right now, so they’re a great price compared to other places with similar items. Forever 21 has a few pairs starting at $13, but they’re thinner than the ones I got from Rue and show some serious panty lines!

Are you loving or hating the jogger trend this year? How are you styling your Joggers?

Trend I’m Loving: Joggers

Okay, I’m a sucker for trends. Florals, orange lips, mint and coral, I’ve fallen for them all. Some of them have been less regrettable than others- I’m actually a fan of peplum now- but if it’s hit shelves since my junior year of high school, I’ve probably tried it.

This year, I’ve already found a fall trend I’m head over heels for. Joggers! Remember when yoga pants were in style? Like not just for errands and the gym, but yoga pants everywhere. At the mall, at the gym, at college campuses, at restaurants and banks across the country. I was a fan of the trend. They’re comfy, they’re flattering, and they can go from lounge wear to day wear with just a few changes.

Joggers are the new yoga pants. A bit more versatile than yoga pants, these skinny sweats come in every fabric, pattern, and color imaginable. They’re almost a modern take on the tragic harem pant trend of a few years past. (Tragic for me anyway. I do not look good in harem pants.)

IMG_0363.JPG

Anyway: I ordered a pair of Joggers as a treat for myself after a stressful week a bit ago. They finally arrived and I really don’t want to take them off. Mine were $13 from Forever 21, but you can find them almost everywhere right now!

So far I’ve tried them with a nice tank top and with a flowy blouse. I would definitely wear them out like that on a casual girl’s day, or during errands. I’m thinking during the winter I’ll be lounging in them with a loose sweatshirt, or wearing them out to the park with a cute sweater!

I’m thinking about ordering a pair in a less traditional sweatpants material, but we’ll see…

Ootd: Blue Period.

Today’s outfit is courtesy of the amazing sales at Rue 21. I got flats, a pair of anchor print pants, and a shirt for the price I almost paid for a single pair of sandals at Kohl’s. Luckily I noticed the Rue 21 next door and headed on over to check out their clothes.

IMG_0222.JPG

The pants were on denim clearance for $10, and the shirt was on seasonal clearance for $3. I scored the grey flats, not pictured, for $5.

I’m still in St. Louis unexpectedly- luckily today I will have the chance to visit a few places.
