Friday Five

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for me to gush about my favorite things of the week again! This week I’m excited, because I have a lot to talk about with you guys.

1. Covergirl Foundations

I have tried a lot of foundations. From high end to drugstore, they all work for a while, then irritate my skin to no end. We’re not talking acne here. We’re talking full on rashes, hives, and horrible itching. This is generally considered “not good” by the majority of the population, so that leaves me with skin that looks funky and no way to cover it.

Enter my three new best friends in the makeup world. Covergirl NatureLuxe liquid foundation in 305, and Covergirl Sensitive Skin powder and liquid foundation in 210 (powder) and 205 (liquid).

I’m not sure why my face color varies so widely in these three foundations, especially two of them seem like they should be identical, but I really don’t care. These aren’t breaking me out, they look flawless, and they’re cheap too! Seriously, nothing better.

2. Beet Salad

I’ve talked about this before, but I’ve fallen even more in love with this, if that’s possible. Each week I get to pick out one “treat” at the grocery store. This week I picked out a pint of local beet salad!

Goat cheese, mandarin oranges, and local root veggies. What could be better? Well, not eating all of it at once and freaking out that your pee turns neon pink, probably. (Am I allowed to talk about that on a blog? Well, I just did.) Other than the unfortunate side effects of consuming large amounts of these bright veggies, this has probably been the highlight of my week.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar.

Great for digestion. Great for your skin. Apparently great in fresh juices with a little bit of ginger, too. Need I say more?

(Speaking of juice, I just found out that my watermelon juice habit is actually good for me. Watermelon has a ton of iron, which is great because I am always lacking iron. Plus it’s pretty, too!)

4. NYX matte lipstick in “Nude.”

I’m almost ashamed to admit is, as someone who talks about makeup as much as I do. Out of all the fabulous lipsticks I have collected over the years, I did not previously own a true nude.

I cleaned out my makeup drawer earlier this week, which meant a lot of swatching and a lot of “keep or ditch” conversations with friends. During my total overhaul of my lipstick collection, I noticed that I had a ton of fun winter colors, but nothing to transition into fall! I had to fix this.

So I am now the proud owner of Nyx’s “Nude” matte lipstick. I’ve worn it twice since I got it this week and I’ve gotta say, it’s fantastic.

5. Desserts.

Okay, this is a broad category, but let’s be real. When I was little, sweets were the last thing I wanted out of a meal. Now? This is my first time admitting it, but I love sweets. Macarons, cheesecake, frozen hot chocolate, I love it all. Which is why it made my week when my husband surprised me with this treat:

Yep, you’re seeing this right! Frozen hot chocolate from a local chocolatier, and macarons that combined two of my favorite things- dessert and Earl Grey! Do I have the best husband or what?

So what are you loving this week?

Style Sunday

When my best friend, Taylor, asked me to take a professional photo for her LinkedIn account, I sprung at the chance for a photoshoot. We used to take photos of each other all the time in high school, but after we moved apart we had a lot less time for goofy shenanigans. Yesterday was the perfect time to reconnect and have some photo fun- especially since we got to use my mom’s Canon Rebel.

Taylor has always had a really cool sense of style. For our photoshoot, she brought a maxi-dress that she said was “her favorite” for her trip to Mexico, because she could “dress it up or down with different shoes and accessories.” The dress totally exemplifies what I’ve always liked about her style- it’s cool, it’s casual, and it’s totally her.

Even though it was stormy and humid, we got some really great shots.

It was great to goof around in front of a camera again! Taylor and I learned photography together, using her old point-and-shoot.

Of course, we had to make time for an outfit change!

Since it had been a while since Taylor was behind a real camera, she got some shots of me as well.

The rain eliminated a lot of props we wanted to use, but we did find a step ladder!

We had so much fun showing off our style that we’ve decided to do it again soon. After all, it’s her senior year of college, so she’s due for some super cute senior pictures, right?

It was great to do this stylish shoot with Taylor, and it was cool how willing she was to be on the blog. I guess some people are just made for fame! 😉

Friday Five

Once again, it’s time to share the five things I’m loving this week. I’m really excited to make this post this time because it’s been a great week and I could think of way more than five things to share with you. However, I’ve set precedent with myself, so I’m going to stick with the five best of the best. Without further ado, I present the Friday Five!

1. Wild-caught Georgia Shrimp

When presented the chance to eat some fresh Georgia wild-caught shrimp, your answer should always be yes. It’s not just because I’m a Georgia resident, Georgia wild-caught shrimp really is the best. So when my husband’s store had some in stock, there was only one thing to do! We had a shrimp boil.

Shrimp boils are one of the best ways to enjoy wild-caught Georgia shrimp, and they’re super easy. Definitely a highlight of the week.

2. Secrets by Mary Lambert

This is my go-to feel good song at the moment. I love Mary’s voice, I love the message, I love the beat… There’s not a thing about this song I’m not into! Plus it’s on spotify so I can listen to it whenever I want!

3. Heir of Fire

I’ve been waiting for this book for so long. I keep saying I’m going to post a full review on the blog, and I will, but for right now, I’m just going to revel in how great it was. Seriously, I read it in one sitting. If you’re looking for a young adult fantasy novel with a female lead, this series is fantastic. There are a lot of female assassin novels out on the market now, but this is the best. And I would know because I’ve read most of them.

4. NYX matte lipsticks

It’s getting closer to fall, so I’ve been pulling out darker lipsticks again. Yeah, I know, between my jogger obsession and my willingness to pull out winter makeup, you’d think I was ready for summer to be over! I admit I’m not looking forward to winter, but fall is my favorite season because it doesn’t make me pass out. Plus I can wear my favorite lipstick ever: NYX matte lipstick in Alabama. It’s a quintessential deep red, and looks good on a variety of skin tones. You can use it with a NYX lipliner to make it last longer, or alone if you’re daring.

5. Hammocking

I really need to get an eno. My hammocks are cool but they aren’t portable, and I think taking a hammock with me wherever I go would be just about the coolest thing ever. As it is though, me and Minnie the foster dog like to hang out and read or nap in the two backyard hammocks. If these storms ever blow over, I’m heading back out there so I won’t be pale anymore.

Okay, okay, I know I said five things. But here’s a bonus “family photo” of my husband, me, and our two youngest cats. Aren’t we adorable? I love that my husband was willing to pose for photos with me and the cats until I got a few I liked!

Friday Five!

Is it that time of the week again? The end of the week, and the end of August- time seems to be flying this year!

As with every Friday, it’s time to share the things I loved this week. So here’s the best of the best of the week!

1. My Keurig Mini

I was impressed with my Keurig. I wrote about it before. But then I ordered a variety pack of tea, cider, and other speciality drinks for it. Now? This is the best invention ever!

I’m really digging herbal teas, as too much caffeine seems to be irritating a bunch of symptoms that aren’t really blog appropriate. However, these hot cocoas and the cappuccino flavors rock!

2. Aviary Photo-editing App

This free app offers in-app purchases to beef up the already impressive editing capabilities. I’ve purchased a few extra sticker packs and borders to play with, just for fun, but even without them, this is the editing app I keep returning to. It’s easy to use and has some cool effects.

Be careful though, it’s easy to get caught up in what you can do and over edit your photos.

3. Pur Minerals Lip Gloss Sticks

I found one of these in my makeup drawer, completely unused. It was in a pretty coral color that matched what I was wearing, so I figured I would give it a try. The result? Loving it! A touch of color and completely non-drying. Perfect for my summer sunburnt lips!

4. The Sporty Look

So, I finally figured out how to style my Joggers. For a summer-to-fall transition look, I’m loving joggers with fun sneakers and a classic tee. For errands or just to look a little more fancy, I’m pairing peplum with my Joggers for a really neat look. But as much as I love the peplum+joggers? I just keep coming back to the sporty look.

5. Beets

I thought I hated beets, I really did. But after trying a local best salad from Grocery Bar, I’m a convert. They’re earthy, they’re pretty, and they’re perfect with goat cheese. Plus they’re inexpensive and readily available. Really, what more can you ask for in a root vegetable?

So what are you loving this week?

Simple Make-up Look

I don’t do make-up every day, partly because I work from home and seriously, my dog is not impressed with a full face of makeup and some beautifully curled hair. But recently, I went to a dinner celebrating my best friend returning home from a college trip to Mexico, and I wanted to look a little special.

Here I am pre-makeup!

Not too bad, not too bad, but nothing special. So let’s see after.

Much more appropriate for the occasion! For this simple look, I used a beauty blender to apply elf mineral primer, then elf BB cream. Then I tightlined half of my upper lids with NYX very black eyeliner pencil. I used Billion Dollar Brows brow pencil in brown and clear brow gel on my brows. Then, I swept elf baked highlighter in blush gems in a figure 8 motion around my eyes.

After that, all I did was apply some elf baked blush in peachy cheeky to the apples of my cheeks and top the look off with Covergirl Bombshell Curvaceous Mascara in Very Black. I’m in love with this mascara, guys. It has mixed reviews but personally I use it almost daily!

So that’s all for my simple, casual makeup look. What do you use for a casual dinner out?

Friday Five:

This week has been weird, weird, and busy. Thanks to starting Cymbalta, I’ve been sleepy and tired and not really up for much. So I apologize for the lack of posts and the lack of inspiration. Once again, here’s my Friday Five, with five things I loved this week.

1. Bath and Body Works True Blue Spa Line.

I’m not really a fan of bath products, usually. As long as my hair looks good and my skin looks fine, I don’t care what I’m putting on them. However, this stuff has totally changed my mind. Full of fresh scents and some seriously great products, this is the bath product line I’ve been waiting for. I’m never going back to my old drugstore soaps and shampoos.

2. Vanilla Coke.

This is one of those things I know I should quit but I never will. The caffeine really doesn’t do much for me, which is sad as I’m currently fighting to keep my eyes open after even the smallest exertion. The taste, however, is awesome. It’s a small treat in a world where all of my favorite foods were taken away from in one fell swoop with my celiac diagnosis several years ago.

3. Tom’s of Maine.

From gluten free deodorant to some seriously awesome toothpaste, I’m loving Tom’s of Maine. My last deodorant was giving me rashes from gluten I didn’t suspect, so finding something all natural and gluten free to take its place was awesome. The deodorant comes in several awesome scents and the toothpaste doesn’t taste as bad as most do. Seriously am I the only one who thinks normal toothpaste tastes like chemicals?

4. Beach Waves!

I thought I couldn’t rock this look because I have short hair. Which doesn’t make sense, because my hair is naturally curly. With a bottle of Not Your Mother’s beach wave spray and a Pinterest tutorial for putting summery waves in short hair, I set out on a hair journey that would change my life hair forever.

Seriously, I got a good two days out of this hair before I had to do anything to it. I had the help of Not Your Mother’s beach wave spray, Got2B styling gel, and some Batiste dry shampoo. Ignore the fact that I’m not wearing makeup in the photo- I had an allergic reaction to something and had to give my face a break.

5. Basil.

Yeah, another food item. But a very appropriate one for August! From basil infused herb lemonade to some pasta salad with fresh from the garden veggies, basil is so versatile! I’m loving it in Caprese salads and infused waters especially.

The Skin Post.

I’ve been blessed with good skin this far in life. It’s a side effect of my genetic disorder, and it’s the only acceptable symptom of it. I have zero acne, my pores are minimal, my skin is constantly baby soft. If you ignore the easy bruising, skin tearing, and the horrific scarring from even the slightest touch, then you’d think I was pretty lucky.

However, I want to keep my skin healthy. Several of my friends and family members have had skin cancer removed, and I have had a few bad sunburns to my name. Skin tearing and scarring have affected my skin, and I have some pretty rough looking under-eye bags. Since I’ve recently entered my twenties (okay, almost two years ago, but shh), I’ve been trying to take better care of my skin. Here’s what I have learned.

1. Use Sunscreen.

Whether it’s a primer, BB cream, moisturizer, or foundation, I make sure I never leave the house without some sunscreen on my face. In the summer, I generally use a BB cream with at least SPF 30. In the winter, I can knock it down to an SPF 15, but it depends on your climate and weather. Even if you’re just running a few quick errands, it’s really better safe than sorry when it comes to your skin and the sun.

2. Wash Your Face (And Moisturize).

I admit, I didn’t do this when I was a teen. It wasn’t until I went off to college that I got in the habit of washing my face regularly. This is the one area of my beauty regimen where I will really shell out, other than my hair. Using a better face wash and moisturizer regularly can really make the difference, especially during seasonal changes when your skin can get dry. I really like Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar moisturizer, and it’s what I use regularly. I also use an intense moisturizer on my scars and stretchmarks to keep them from tearing, but that’s probably not necessary for most people. Find something you like, and stick to it.

3. Eat and Drink Well!

I’m probably not the best person to talk about this, because I definitely had gluten-free macaroni with bacon and extra cheese for lunch today. But, I drink a lot of water- thanks POTS- and I’ve definitely noticed that my skin looks better when I keep my liquid intake up. Water is great for your skin, but it can be hard to drink enough, so eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies can get water AND vitamins in you. It’s a win-win, especially while it’s still produce season. I love getting food from local farmer’s markets, especially meats, because I’m less likely to break out in weird dermatitis from preservatives or chemicals.

There’s a million more skincare tips out there, but these three are the basis. What’s your go-to skin routine?
